For over four decades, Charles Dowding has inspired growers around the world with his healthy and health-giving foods, using a soil-loving, organic No Dig approach. His growing methods have transformed countless vegetable gardens into abundant, resilient & productive spaces, proving that when we disturb the soil less, it gives us more.
The highest honour in horticulture, the Elizabeth Victoria Medal of Honour was awarded to Charles in 2024 by the Royal Horticultural Society, for an outstanding contribution to horticulture and gardening.

Charles Dowding passionately shares his expertise, inspiring growers worldwide through on-site teaching, lectures, online courses, articles, and a remarkable collection of gardening books. His first book, “Organic Gardening pub. Green Books 2007, brought his work to a wide public and
ignited a profound interest in the No-Dig method of gardening. Since then he has authored fifteen titles, firmly establishing himself as a leading authority on No Dig horticulture. In 2018, "The Calendar of Sowing Dates" was created; this practical month-by-month guide for gardeners, revised and updated annually, has become an essential and trusted companion for growers around the globe.

No Dig Educational Teaching Day at ‘’Homeacres’’ in Somerset, England
In the midst of building his No Dig legacy, Charles has transformed his market garden farm, “Homeacres,” into a vibrant hub of learning and inspiration, inviting eager students to embrace his methods while continuing to cultivate and provide organic, health-giving produce.
No Dig Let’s Nature Do The Digging
Before my epic No Dig Day with Charles in August 2023 - complete with an unforgettable lunch of vibrant, plant-based dishes harvested straight from his garden, I thought No Dig was simply about saving my back and dodging osteopath bills. I had no idea it would transform the way I see the soil… and growth itself.
No Dig methods are rooted in powerful principles. Healthy soil begets healthy plants, and we nurture the soil from the top because it flourishes when left undisturbed. By refraining from digging or rotavating, which disrupts vital fungal networks and soil life, we empower earthworms and microbes to cultivate naturally.
Preserving soil structure nurtures the vibrant ecosystem that fuels plant growth and secures long-term fertility. At the end of my day of learning with the great man, it became clear that the secret to success truly lies in surface application of high quality compost– perfect that, and the rest follows naturally.
Beyond What We Can See
In 2025, Charles released his inspiring book "New Energies For Gardening,” where he revealed his journey into understanding that everything is a frequency of some kind, insights that have often been overlooked in the realm of modern science. His exploration of unseen energy sources, like magnetic water treatment, is yielding remarkable benefits. Other methods he is testing and integrating into his growing methods includes: copper coiling & copper tools, vortices, solar dowsing with five sticks, paramagnetic towers, lunar planting, and the transformative power of intention
A Remarkable Discovery: When Magnetism Meets Water: Unexpected Crystalline Patterns Revealed
In 2023, renowned crystalline photographer and water researcher Veda Austin shared striking observations from her work with magnetically treated water. Using crystallographic photography, she examined tap water partially frozen after treatment with the Abimax Magnostream. The treated samples formed intricate, highly ordered geometric patterns, while untreated tap water produced more fragmented and irregular structures. In further trials with fresh spring water, she documented a dramatic lightning-bolt formation, which the team at Abimax interpreted as evidence of a strong magnetic influence.

Although such imagery does not in itself constitute definitive scientific proof, the visual differences raise intriguing questions about how magnetic fields may influence water’s structural organisation. These observations have inspired deeper exploration into the many reported benefits, which compelled Charles Dowding to investigate and test the concept within a horticultural setting.
Water: An Untapped Field of Possibility

For Charles, water is an exciting field of study because it possesses so many unrecognised qualities.’’ He quotes; ‘’ our bodies and plants are mostly composed of water, and it is ever-present in the air, therefore, it is essential for us to learn more about its hidden potential, which I find incredibly fascinating,"
Charles explains. "Water nourishes every cell of plant life, carries minerals, supports microbial activity, regulates temperature, and literally drives growth. Yet,most of us simply consider it to be 'wet.'"
Being a visionary who looks beyond the ‘’wet’’, Charles believes water holds qualities modern science is only just beginning to measure, and that working with its subtle properties can unlock surprising benefits in both garden and home.
Salads Showed Strong, Healthy Growth In Cold Challenging Conditions

salads grow strong in winter after using the Magnostream water treatment
In December 2022, Charles spoke to Abimax; ‘’ I clipped a Magnostream magnetic water device onto my garden hose. Installation took less than a minute, there were no moving parts & no complicated setup, it was so easy to use’’.
What followed surprised him. He says ‘’through the cold winter of 2022–23, the salads in my polytunnel showed notably strong, healthy growth, even in challenging conditions, and I noticed both my tomatoes and cucumbers in my summer polytunnel were amazing’’

Charles with Magnostream on Hose
Encouraged by the results he observed in his plants, Charles installed the Magnostream Pro device on the larger main water pipe entering his house. ‘’I was unaware that magnetism could have a descaling effect, but after six weeks, I noticed something unexpected: the kettle, which had previously been coated with a stubborn layer of limescale, became clear’’. ‘’ All this achieved without chemicals, expensive filtration systems, or maintenance, just water treated magnetically as it flowed through the pipes.
Why Magnetic Water Matters for Gardeners
Charles believes ‘’If water structure influences how minerals behave - and how plants absorb nutrients - then even small improvements could ripple outward into stronger growth, healthier roots, and more resilient crops’’.
For no-dig organic gardeners in particular - whose priority is to nurture and protect soil biology rather than disturb it - hydromagnetic water conditioning has the potential to become a highly valuable ally, supporting healthy soil ecosystems and resilient plant growth.
